President Nechirvan Barzani welcomes the new Ambassador of Greece

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, December 12, 2022

President Nechirvan Barzani received today in Erbil Mr. Georgios Almanos, the new Ambassador of Greece to Iraq.

At the meeting, the President congratulated Mr. Almanos on assuming the office, wished him success in his duties, and voiced full support of the Kurdistan Region for the Ambassador’s mission in the country.

Discussions focused on the development of bilateral relations of Greece with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the fields of education, trade, economy, and tourism.

For his part Ambassador Almanos praised the progress and peace in the Kurdistan Region and highlighted the significant role of the Kurdistan Region for the stability of Iraq and the wider region.

Also at the meeting, attended by the Consul General of Greece in the Kurdistan Region, other topics of mutual interest were discussed.

Prime Minister Barzani receives new Greek Ambassador to Iraq

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today received the new Greek Ambassador to Iraq, Georgios Almanos.

Prime Minister Barzani congratulated the Ambassador on his new posting while expressing hopes of consolidating relations between the Kurdistan Region and Greece during their meeting which was also attended by the Greek Consul General to Erbil, Stavros Kyrimis.

Readout of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s call with UK Minister of State for the Middle East and the United Nations

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani spoke by phone today with Lord Tariq Ahmad, the UK Minister of State for the Middle East, South Asia, and the United Nations.

Both sides emphasized the significance of the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Barzani thanked Britain’s support and technical assistance in digitalizing public services and reform taxes in the KRG. They highlighted strengthening of bilateral relations, particularly in security cooperation, education, trade and investment.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the Kurdistan Region’s first export of agricultural produce from Halabja and Zakho to the UAE and the Gulf.

Both agreed that the UK could support the Kurdistan Region in becoming a food basket to the broader region.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani lays foundation stone for the first British university in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today laid the foundation stone for the British campus of the University of London in Erbil.

Prime Minister Barzani stated the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ninth Cabinet has prioritized developing its education sector and highlighted the efforts taken to expand and evolve academic studies across the Kurdistan Region.

“I am pleased to see the improvement in the level of education in the Kurdistan Region. Opening such scientific centers will indeed help in raising awareness as well as the scientific and academic levels in the Kurdistan Region,” Prime Minister Barzani said during the ceremony attended by local officials and UK diplomats.

The Prime Minister thanked the UK Ambassador to Iraq, Mark Bryson-Richardson, UK Consul General to Erbil, David Hunt, and the KRG’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for combining their efforts in helping to bring the University of London to Erbil.

“Every university in Kurdistan has been able to make a positive impact on our community based on its ability and expertise. I am certain that this university will be another part of the scientific projects that we have started in the Kurdistan Region,” said the Prime Minister.

President Nechirvan Barzani receives President Katalin Novak of Hungary

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, December 9, 2022

President Nechirvan Barzani received today in Erbil President Katalin Novak of Hungary. The meeting covered a wide range of issues, including the bilateral relations of Hungary with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the latest developments in Iraq and the political process in the country, the pending issues between Erbil and Baghdad and the ongoing dialogue to resolve their disputes. The fight against terrorism and the continued threats of ISIS, the situation of the refugees and the status of ethnic and religious communities in the Kurdistan Region were highlighted during the meeting.

President Nechirvan Barzani and President Katalin Novak emphasized their mutual readiness to develop their bilateral relations and cooperation in all areas, underlining the necessity of the continued cooperation and support of the international coalition to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to combat terrorism and to eliminate ISIS.

President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his pleasure at the visit of President Novak, referring to the visit as the demonstration of Hungary’s support for the Kurdistan Region. The President conveyed the gratitude and appreciation of the Kurdistan Region for the military support of Hungary to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region during the fight against ISIS, and also for their humanitarian support of Christian and Yezidi communities.

For her part, President Novak expressed the gratitude and appreciation of her country for the sacrifices and the role of Peshmerga in defeating ISIS, reaffirming Hungary’s continued cooperation and support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to eliminate terrorism, and referring to ISIS and terror as threats to freedom and democracy. Ms. Novak thanked the Kurdistan Region for cherishing peaceful coexistence and tolerance among communities, and supporting the displaced people, the refugees and the ethnic and religious communities, especially the Christians and Yezidis in the Kurdistan Region.

Discussions also focused on the relationship of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with neighboring and regional countries, the importance of preserving stability and sovereignty of Iraq, the war in Ukraine and its ramifications, and other topics of mutual interest.

 

 

President Nechirvan Barzani welcomes President Katalin Novak of Hungary to Kurdistan Region

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, December 9, 2022

President Nechirvan Barzani received the Hungarian President Ms. Katalin Novak at the Erbil International Airport today Friday. President Novak is on an official trip to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region where she will visit Hungarian troops stationed in the country as part of the International Coalition against ISIS.

Later today, President Novak will visit the Hungarian forces and the humanitarian projects implemented under the supervision of the Hungarian Cooperation Program in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

President Nechirvan Barzani and President Novak will hold a meeting this evening to discuss Hungary’s bilateral relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, their collective cooperation, and the latest developments in Iraq and the wider region.

PM Masrour Barzani receives letter from Italian counterpart

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today received a letter from the new Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

In the letter, Prime Minister Meloni highlighted the friendly and historical relationship Italy and the Kurdistan Region share, emphasizing her country’s willingness to strengthen bilateral relationship with the Region in the fields of trade, agriculture, and energy.

Prime Minister Meloni also recognized the joint efforts by Italy and the Kurdistan Region’s in maintaining stability and security.

She also expressed her hope that the new Iraqi government will strengthen Erbil-Baghdad relations to reach a common ground of peace, development, and prosperity.

“I look forward to seeing you and meeting with you at the earliest chance,” Prime Minister Meloni wrote to Prime Minister Barzani.

PM Masrour Barzani receives a German delegation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today received a German diplomatic delegation led by the Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tobias Tunkel.

Prime Minister Barzani discussed ways to strengthen the already strong bilateral relationship between the Kurdistan Region and Germany with the delegation.

President Nechirvan Barzani receives a delegation of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Germany

President Nechirvan Barzani received today in Erbil Mr. Tobias Tunkel, the Director of the Middle East at the German Foreign Affairs Ministry, and an accompanying delegation which included the German Ambassador to Baghdad and the Consul General in the Kurdistan Region.

The meeting focused on the bilateral relations of Germany with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the latest developments in the wider region, the relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and the bilateral relations of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with the neighboring countries.

President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his appreciation for Germany’s military and humanitarian support to the Kurdistan Region in the war against terrorism and shared his observations of his recent visit to Baghdad where he held series of meetings with high Iraqi officials and leaders.

Mr. Tobias Tunkel spoke about the purpose and program of his visit to the Kurdistan Region, and expressed his country’s willingness to continue to cooperate with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and to support Erbil and Baghdad resolve their pending issues.

The security situation in the wider region, the status of the refugees, facilitating their safe return to their home areas, and the implementation of the Shingal agreement were also highlighted, reiterating the continued humanitarian support of Germany to the refugees.
